Mavericks Montauk’s motto is “It’s a steakhouse, but it’s not a steakhouse.” Declaring itself a “surf and turf reboot,” Mavericks spent its magical debut season in Montauk this summer, subverting traditional dining expectations and introducing executive chef and East Hampton native Jeremy Bluestein. We served a very memorable dish.
Demetri Sopkiw, bar manager at Mavericks Montauk, said the same “maverick” approach was taken when the team designed the drinks program. Of course, that led to Mavericks’ great twists on classic cocktails like the Manhattan.
The Original Manhattan is a mixology classic that exudes sophistication, sophistication, and charm, yet is simple, delicious, and easy to mix. With a flavor profile appealing to novices and seasoned drinkers alike, Manhattan is said to have been invented by a bartender named “Black” who worked at a gin shop in downtown Manhattan in the mid-19th century. there is.
Competing origin stories aside, one thing is certain: this drink dates back to the mid-1800s and was one of the first cocktails to include sweet vermouth.
Its base is bourbon or rye whiskey and sweet vermouth, usually tied together with a few drops of cocktail bitters.
And that’s the difference with Mavericks Manhattan.
Sopkiw’s riff on a charming classic with roots in 19th-century Manhattan replaces bitters with amaro (a bittersweet herbal liqueur made from an aromatic plant with ancient Roman roots) and adds a touch of tart cherry cordial. It adds a kick.
“It’s finished,” Demetri said. “Manhattan, but not Manhattan.”
