It’s safe to say the preparations for this week’s Ocean’s Calling Festival have been a long time coming. Anticipation is running high for the three-day music event, which will be held from Friday, September 29th to Sunday, October 1st.
An estimated 50,000 advance tickets are being sold per day for the festival at Ocean City’s Inlet, which officials say will be the largest ticketed event ever held there. .
The first edition of Ocean’s Calling was originally scheduled for the same weekend last year, but was canceled at the last minute due to the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. This was a disappointment to the tens of thousands of music fans from across the country, especially those who had already traveled to the OC and checked into hotel rooms.
Many people made the most of the situation by staying for the holidays anyway, and local bars and restaurants boomed.
This year’s festival is expected to be held rain or shine, with more than 30 national music artists performing over the three days. Celebrities include Alanis Morissette (who was scheduled to sing last year), Jack Johnson, The Lumineers, Weezer, John Mayer, The Wallflowers and Sheryl Crow.
Ocean’s Calling’s arrival fills a regional void created by the absence of Dover’s annual Firefly Music Festival this year.
Vermont jam band Phish announced this month that it will hold its own major festival next summer at Firefly’s usual venue, The Woodlands (adjacent to Dover International Speedway). Phish’s four-day event is scheduled for August 15-18, 2024.
In other Delmarva music news, seasonal Bottle & Coke in Dewey Beach is closing this week on a high note. The celebration includes two sold-out concerts by country star and Sussex County native Jimmie Allen on Thursday and Friday, September 28 and 29.
Nightclub owner Alex Pires said 2,400 tickets were sold out the first day they went on sale for $40 each on July 21st. There are currently a few tickets on the online resale market with markup prices ranging from $70 to $300 (buyer beware). .
The Cork’s final day of the season is Saturday, September 30th, with eight hours of party music including Triple Rail Turn from 5pm, Tokyo 3am, JJ Rap Band and DJ Nappy .
Coke’s sister store, nearby Rusty Ladder, will remain open weekends through Saturday, Oct. 28, when Love Seed Mama Jump will perform at 9 p.m. during its annual Halloween-themed closing party .
