Honda is Promote today That drivers of its electric vehicles will soon have access to the largest number of charging sites in America. This is thanks to just-announced agreements with EVgo and Electrify America, two of the largest electric vehicle charging networks in the United States. Honda previously signed up to the NACS charging standard, giving access to Tesla’s massive Supercharger network. Together, along with a joint venture with six other automakers, Honda is probably right in saying that owners have the greatest number of options for recharging their electric vehicles.
Now Honda needs to make some electric vehicles. It has yet to launch a modern electric vehicle in the US market, making today’s announcement a failure.
Honda has been selling and leasing electric cars since the 1990s, but in limited quantities. The cool and affordable Honda e is the company’s latest product. The small car arrived in European and Japanese markets in 2020, and its sales have not yet exceeded 4,000 units. The Honda Clarity Electric was the last electric car it brought to the US market, and the car was only leased to consumers in two markets, ending in 2022.
Honda’s near-term electric vehicle strategy relies on the partnership with GM and its flexible Ultium EV platform. This partnership was announced in 2022, and has so far produced two Honda electric vehicles: the Acura ZDX, announced today, Introduction Honda. Both are built on the GM platform and are similar in size although the ZDX has more power (and a higher price). These two cars will be Honda’s first mass-produced zero-emissions cars, with 45,000 Prologues expected to be produced in the first year and 70,000 after that. At launch, the ZDX and Prologue will ship with the older CCS charging connector, and at some point in 2024 or 2025, they will later get adapters for charging into Tesla Superchargers.
But Honda is just getting started. It previously said the company is targeting 30 electric vehicle models by 2030 with a production volume of more than 2 million Vehicles General – Lots to take advantage of this large charging network.
