WATCH: Historic DeLand Hotel changes management
Ian Carey talks about his decision to buy a nearly 100-year-old boutique hotel. Former owner Ross Janke talks about the process of restoration.
DELAND — The historic DeLand Hotel has a new owner who is already familiar with the property.
Ian Carey is a restaurateur who has rented space on the ground floor of a boutique hotel to run DeLand Eatery for the past two years.
“I just finished (purchasing the hotel) five minutes ago,” Carey said in a phone interview Thursday afternoon.
How much did it sell for?
Carey said he and his wife, Casey, paid $1.4 million for the three-story “prairie-style” building built in 1925 at 422 E. New York Avenue. The sale also included another store on the ground floor, DeLand, a bootlegger-themed bar. cocktail company. The bar recently changed its name from Hemingway’s 442 Craft Cocktail Lounge.
The seller of both the hotel and bar is Ross Janke, who purchased the property in 2016 for $385,000. At the time, the hotel was known as the Eastwood Terrace Inn Bed and Breakfast.
Janke said the building was in poor condition when he bought it. He estimates he spent an additional $300,000 to $400,000 to painstakingly restore the building. Improvements included adding vintage fixtures and furniture throughout the building.
For example, the DeLand Cocktail Company features a 1935 cake chandelier hanging from the ceiling, a triple-arch Brunswick Saloon back bar, and an 1895 solid quartersawn oak bar with original brass knobs and handles. It includes period details such as the front door. -Forged hinges and locks.
One of the unique things about the DeLand Hotel building is that it was designed in the style of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the father of Prairie Style architecture, Janke said. Most prairie-style buildings of the early 20th century were private homes or mansions.
Janke said he decided to sell the hotel because Carey’s interest is in restoring historic properties rather than operating them. He is also an active volunteer member. DeLand Historic Preservation Commission.
“I’m not a restaurant or bar entrepreneur. He’s an entrepreneur,” Janke said of Carey. “I’m more of a developer/preservationist.”
Janke said he has already begun looking for other historic buildings in the area to restore.
New owners’ goal: “Keep it as authentic as possible.”
Carey, the new owner of the DeLand Hotel, said his goal is simple. “It’s just a matter of continuing to do that. Keeping it as authentic as possible and trying to make sure that everyone in the city of DeLand can come and have a great experience.” Dine in an authentic historic setting, great drinks. You can enjoy it. ”
What does DeLand Hotel offer?
The DeLand Hotel currently has 10 guest rooms on the first and second floors.
There is also a third floor, which has been used as a warehouse in recent years. Carey hopes to renovate the top floor to add more hotel rooms or turn it into extended-stay suites, she said.
The DeLand Hotel also leases space on the ground floor for two other businesses: Alley Cats Vintage Couture and the office of real estate broker Gail Waters.

The cocktail lounge’s new name honors DeLand’s founder
Carey took over Hemingway’s 442 Craft Cocktail Lounge from Janke a few months ago, even though the sale had not yet closed. He soon changed the name of his cocktail lounge to his DeLand Cocktail Company.
“I wanted something more DeLand-like,” he said. “It’s a play on the name of Henry DeLand’s DeLand Chemical Company,” he said.
Henry Addison DeLand was a baking soda king who founded the city that bears his last name in 1876. He also founded what is now Stetson University seven years later. DeLand was incorporated as a city in 1882.
Restaurants that serve “American fusion” cuisine
