But they also accuse Mr Khan’s “gold-plated” housing policy, which stipulates details such as ceiling height and window placement, of making housing plans less viable.
Neil Jefferson, managing director of the House Builders’ Federation, said: “London is facing a serious housing crisis and the shortage of new homes will only get worse.
“Successive governments in the capital have failed to create an enabling environment for new housing, deepening social divisions and weakening London economically.
“There is an urgent need for national and local politicians to work together to develop workable policies that enable the industry to deliver the full range of new homes it so desperately needs.”
A spokesperson for the mayor’s office disputed Morior’s figure, saying it took into account smaller housing projects with fewer than 20 units.
“These figures simply do not reflect the level of housebuilding across London,” the spokesperson said.
“The previous mayor [Boris Johnson] Having left the cupboard empty to provide affordable housing in the capital, since 2016 Sadiq has restarted construction in London, delivering more new council homes than at any time since the 1970s. construction has begun, increasing tenfold since 2016 and building all types of housing. Any time since the 1930s.
“Unlike the Government, Mr Sadiq has achieved ambitious affordable housing targets, and the latest official government data on housing completions shows that London is one of the lowest in the country since Mr Sadiq was elected Mayor. This clearly shows that we are outperforming the region.”
