Io also has a global ocean of magma beneath its surface, mysteriously warm polar regions, and about 266 active volcanoes, some of which emit plumes of smoke, extending up to 300 m from the moon’s surface. It has also been suggested that it may have risen more than a mile into the sky. Previous research has found that friction caused by Io’s rock formations caused by tidal forces caused by Jupiter generates extreme levels of heat on Io. In other words, while the moon causes tides in the ocean, Io’s heat is generated by friction caused by the “tides” of rock formations, likely caused by Jupiter.
