If you still think of Fortnite as a colorful, cartoonish battle royale game, you might be surprised to learn how true Epic’s ambitions are.
Fortnite’s big, messy battle to the death may still get top billing, but Epic is steadily expanding the horizons of its landmark game into more than just a game. platform It’s a simple stand-alone game. Incredible Fortnite live events, Kaiju Ariana Grande concerts, and endless User created sandbox worlds They were all hints about her final destination.
X may never be the app for everything, but Fortnite truly is the game for everything. It has become much larger.
Rapid-fire over consecutive days last week, Epic launched three new games within the game, starting with survival title Lego Fortnite on Thursday. Fortnite Fest, a rhythm game from the studio behind Rock Band, and Rocket Racing, a fast-paced racing game from the makers of Rocket League, followed quickly after.
While regular Fortnite modes like Zero Build and classic Battle Royale did respectable numbers over the weekend, and people also dipped their toes into the other two new games, Lego Fortnite debuted on a completely different level.
The new Minecraft/Animal Crossing hybrid from Epic and Lego (more on that in our review later) has peaked at 2.45 million concurrent players Shortly after launch. Over the weekend, it was constantly floating around the same high peaks and by Monday there were around 1.1 million players – itself an epic number that would put a lot of the results on the Steam charts to shame. The “Big Bang” live event that introduced the new game trilogy a little over a week ago saw 11.6 million concurrent players, and attendees in the stadium of live Fortnite performances from artists like Marshmello or Travis Scott.
Lego Fortnite is just one of Epic’s many pillars, but it’s clearly the hottest one right now. Fortnite’s total number of concurrent online players is somewhere well above that (combining all Fortnite Creative modes, Ranked Play, Battle Royale, etc.) but mostly it’s noteworthy that a family-friendly game of a completely different genre is bringing in this much buzz. If Lego Fortnite can maintain its momentum with a constant drip of engaging content that deepens the game, it may have nowhere to go as a free, fun multiplayer experience for the whole family.
