The City of Huntington Beach will continue to celebrate Heritage and Identity Month in 2024 after the City Council voted earlier this month to create a new city history program that eliminates previously approved celebrations. .
City spokeswoman Jennifer Carey said what was lost in translation at that meeting was the council’s work on monthly themes, but that doesn’t prevent the city from recognizing other historical or cultural events. He said it was not a thing.
“The purpose is not to eliminate Women’s History Month or Black History Month or any other cultural heritage month,” she said.
January’s monthly theme is “The Legacy of the Founders – Celebrating Huntington Beach’s Origins,” and will include recognition and celebration of New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and International Holocaust Remembrance Day, officials said. .
February’s theme is “We Love Libraries – Huntington Beach’s Commitment to Books, Reading and Learning,” and the city will also celebrate Black History Month, Huntington Beach’s Birthday and George Washington’s Birthday. The city celebrates Women’s History Month in March.
The city is working with city staff to form a new committee of residents to determine monthly themes and other awards for 2025. Carey said the city will provide more information at the beginning of the year for residents who want to apply to serve on the commission.
“While the monthly historical themes for 2024 have been determined, a calendar of additional acknowledgments and tributes will appear on the city website and will be updated quarterly based on commission and city staff feedback.” a city news release said.
