Third-person multiplayer online battle arena Smite is getting a brilliant new standalone sequel. Smite 2 was officially announced at the 2024 Smite World Championship. While the sequel maintains the same core gameplay that Smite players are accustomed to, the game itself has been rebuilt from the ground up for next-gen. Check out the announcement trailer above and first look preview video below.
For those unfamiliar, Smite is a MOBA like League of Legends or Dota 2. Consisting of five players, two teams battle for control of his three-lane map, with each team growing stronger throughout the match until one team is able to destroy the enemy’s base. . However, unlike his other MOBAs, Smite is played from a third-person perspective, so instead of strategizing from a top-down big picture perspective, you’re in the middle of a clash with a powerful god. It is also designed for consoles and can be easily played using a controller.
The original game was released in 2014 and ran on Unreal Engine 3, so Smite 2, built using Unreal Engine 5, represents a major advancement in technology. Travis Brown, general manager at Titan Forge Games, calls Smite 2 “a journey back in time, taking everything we learned from the decade that made Smite one of the most successful multiplayer games of all time, and rigorously improving everything. This is an opportunity to do so.” ”
In addition to visual upgrades and new animations and effects for Smite’s playable pantheon of gods, Smite 2 also includes several gameplay improvements: new abilities for certain characters, and an all-new backend and matchmaking. System, new map features, new UI.
Smite 2 also features five new gods, including Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic, who will be playable as part of the Smite 2 Alpha playtest scheduled for Spring 2024.
As the development team at Titan Forge Games is rebuilding Smite 2 from the ground up, they are using this opportunity to make even more fundamental adjustments to the game in order to introduce more strategic depth.
In Smite 1, gods use either physical or magical power, and cannot use items that do not belong to the power type. Smite 2 removes these limitations, allowing all gods to build all items and adjust individual abilities based on new Strength and Intelligence stats. Relics will be completely removed and the item store will be rebuilt to make it easier for players to dynamically adapt their builds during a match.
After 10 years of constant updates, creating a brand new version of a game is a huge undertaking. There are 130 gods in Smite 1, and while not all of them will be playable in his Smite 2 right away, the developers have decided that eventually all the gods will be included in the sequel.
However, not all Smite content will carry over to Smite 2. In-game skins released before Year 11 will not carry over, as the team says it’s not practical to recreate the huge amount of content released over the past decade. However, a legacy system is planned to reflect investment veterans. Made by Smite Player.
Fortunately, Smite 2 won’t replace Smite 1 for those who want to stick with the original. The original will continue to run as a standalone game and will be updated regularly for the foreseeable future.
Smite 2 is released on PC, Steam Deck, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5 with full cross-play, and alpha playtest sign-ups are now open.
