This is my message to business leaders in Davos this week. Labor is now the party of wealth creation in British politics – and I want us to be ready to work together from day one to rebuild our country.
Together, we will usher in a new era of cooperation, where government and business work side by side in the national interest.
There are no policies we can announce or plans we can put in place at Westminster that would not benefit from business input. This is the approach I took in opposition, and it is the approach I will take in government.
That’s why I’ve set up a new UK Infrastructure Council with some of the world’s biggest financial companies to work with me to look at how the next Labor government can boost investment in national infrastructure, including transport, energy and digital capacity.
That’s why I’ve pledged to work with industry to remove barriers to investment, including reforming our antiquated planning system, so we can be more competitive on the global stage.
That’s why I said we will invest alongside businesses through a new National Wealth Fund that will benefit from £3 of private sector investment for every £1 invested.
These plans will make a difference for families. This means homeowners are able to save for a mortgage and then make monthly payments, and it means retirees will not see their incomes eroded by skyrocketing energy and food prices.
I have never been more ambitious about the future of our country, and never more determined to bring about the change we so desperately need.
This change will require hard work and commitment. It won’t happen overnight. But after years of loss, Labor is ready to seize the opportunity to serve – and ready to restore the public’s trust in us.
Rachel Reeves is Labour’s Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.
