CTA and Metra reported problems with trains Tuesday morning as frigid temperatures and dangerously cold winds persist across the Chicago area.

Red Line service at 7:11 a.m. was temporarily suspended between Howard and Belmont “due to mechanical problems with the train,” according to the CTA.
“As a result, trains are only operating between 95 Ton and Belmont at this time,” an alert from the agency states.
The issue also affected the Yellow and Purple Lines for the time being, but service to those lines has been restored, officials said.
The agency was scheduled to confirm whether the problem was weather-related.

Rock Island Upbound Train 404, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 6:57 a.m., was stopped at 111th Street due to a “train-vehicle collision,” Metra reported.
“The expected delay time is unknown,” Metra added.
A Metra spokesperson told NBC Chicago that the vehicle crashed into the railroad tracks and is still being removed.
This is why Metra workers light the tracks on fire during cold weather.
Metra added that no one in the car or on the train was injured.
Metra’s Rock Island Line runs from Joliet to Chicago, with stops in New Lenox, Tinley Park, Oak Forest, and more.
