The world of cocktails is always changing. Classics make a triumphant return to rotation, sometimes centuries after their demise, while modern hits fade into thin air. The big theme right now is that it’s complex and delicious. “Mixology” is back! That means drinks like his gin-basil smash are now at the top of the most popular cocktail order lists around the world.
The Gin Basil Smash is a modern classic that has been taking the scene by storm since 2008. This drink originated in Hamburg, his mid-80s German cocktail scene, and was originally called “gin pesto.” When the drink exploded on the global stage, it became the Gin Basil Smash. Because the drink contained no parmesan cheese, pine nuts, or olive oil, only fresh basil. The “plague” part was unnecessarily confusing.
Today, this drink is as popular as ever. It’s so refreshing that it doesn’t go away easily. Thanks to the basil, it’s perfect for a summer drink while eating pizza outside, as well as an apres-ski drink with a bright, funky, spiced vibe. It’s versatile, that’s what we aim for.

- 2oz London Dry Gin
- 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice
- 0.25 oz simple syrup
- 2 sprigs of basil
- ice
- fresh basil for garnish
This is a very easy to follow shopping list. I use the classic Bombay London Dry Gin. Available at any liquor store for about $18. The rest is easily available. Be sure to use good quality fresh basil.
Things necessary:
- rocks glass (chilled)
- cocktail shaker
- cocktail strainer
- fine mesh strainer
- muddler
- Jigger
- hand juicer
- paring knife
Method:
- Add the basil and simple syrup to the bottom of the cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to damage the basil leaves and loosen the stems a little. Add gin, lemon juice, and a large handful of ice to the shaker. Cover and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds.
- Fill a rocks glass with large ice cubes. Strain the cocktail twice into a rocks glass and garnish with a sprig of fresh basil. serve.
Conclusion:
It’s a really delicious cocktail. Basil adds a pop of sharp spice, like spearmint meets nasturtium. It’s a nice bright spice that’s light and oily enough to give the drink a silky mouthfeel.
Sweet syrup and lemon add brightness with a lemonade note of juniper cut and a hint of clove thanks to the gin. All of this combines to create a surprisingly drinkable cup that packs a punch of flavor with every sip. When winter comes, our senses awaken. The brightness and sharpness of spicy basil will open your eyes and prepare you for the coming spring and the vibrancy that lies within.
Lastly, if you’re having a freshly baked pizza topped with fresh basil, this is the perfect combination. I’m just saying!
