According to the CDC, 93 Americans died from complications from cosmetic surgery in the country from 2009 to 2022.
The number of deaths has increased in recent years, with more than half occurring since 2018.
The death toll peaked in 2020 with 17 deaths.
All of these incidents were related to liposuction, with the overwhelming majority (92%) involving buttock fat transfer (also known as a Brazilian butt lift).
The popularity of the Brazilian butt lift has skyrocketed in recent years. All but one of the patients who died during surgery in the Dominican Republic were women, with a median age of 40 years.

The CDC warned that “infectious diseases occur regularly after cosmetic surgery performed outside the United States.”

Among those who died from complications from a Brazilian butt lift in the Dominican Republic was New York City Department of Corrections Rikers Island Captain Tandra Bowser Williams.
But the Caribbean nation is not alone in leaving patients with alarming and potentially fatal complications.
