Let’s give one point to the good people in the fight against cancer.
Researchers at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea have successfully created a powerful chemical composition that can eradicate tumor cells. Research results revealed in Angewandte Chemie.
Scientists have developed a promising new anti-cancer drug by manipulating intracellular calcium levels, perhaps the key to “anti-tumor” prescriptions.
Too many calcium ions are usually harmful, suffocating healthy cellular components such as mitochondria, which any ninth-grade biology student will tell you is the powerhouse of the cell.
But now scientists have discovered a way to harness that harmful overflow to drive away and destroy tumor cells in the body through a phenomenon called a “calcium storm.”
They also found that exposure to infrared light enhanced the effectiveness of the new drug against the storm.
The injectable formulation was tested in tumor-affected mice using specially modified silica beads that are not harmful to rodents.
Once the drug reached the bloodstream, the team was able to confirm that it successfully reached the tumor and was activated in the presence of infrared light.
Within just a few days, their tumors disappeared.
The research team is now optimistic that this formulation can also be used in further biomedical research.
The announcement also comes on the heels of a new method that leverages machine learning to accurately test for ovarian cancer.
