Looking for new super-cheap skincare hacks? If you’re feeling brave, why not consider trying out the 43-year-old’s highly controversial, but frugal beauty trick? .
Orim Bright, a 22-year-old Canadian influencer with 1.2 million followers, revealed on TikTok that his mother uses alcohol wipes every night to clean her face, chest, and back.
The social media star captioned the video, “I haven’t done this but for some reason it worked so well for my mom that she wanted to share.”
But one viewer claimed she was “cringing” at the unusual product choice, so FEMAIL consulted a dermatologist to find out if the skincare secret was really worth trying.
Olim, who shares vegan recipes and DIY beauty hacks, captioned the shocking video with the hashtag “Skincare?” and “affordable”.
“So, I’m going to share with you my skincare secret that I’ve been following all my life and which is highly frowned upon,” Olim’s mother explains, adding that she is almost 44 years old.
“I wash my face every night with rubbing alcohol, like 70 percent rubbing alcohol,” she admitted, laughing behind her back.
“So I just rub my face with rubbing alcohol,” she said, showing off her process, noting that she does it “in areas where you might get little pimples.”
She also puts it on her chest and back, the pads turning black with dirt.
Mothers apply avocado oil on their faces before going to bed. “It’s also super cheap!” the unlikely influencer declared.
The video has been viewed more than 700,000 times so far, with many followers shocked by her pared-down beauty routine.
One person was appalled, saying, “My sensitive skin could easily flare up,” and Olim agreed, “If I did that, my skin would dry out quickly.”
Another wrote: “I’m a qualified esthetician and this is driving me nuts.” She’s beautiful – but aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I hope others don’t start things like this. ”
But not everyone was surprised by the unexpected skincare secret, and some even became fans.
Regarding the 43-year-old’s youthful appearance, one commenter declared, “Her skin is beautiful so anything goes.”
Olim agreed.Well, your skin is better than mine! Always clear! Also, she doesn’t have dark circles, so I’m really jealous of her. ”
Some people even use alcohol pads themselves, with one person writing, “I’ve been applying rubbing alcohol to my face every day since I was a teenager…and then I always apply moisturizer.” . It’s an astringent,” one person agreed, adding, “I always use rubbing alcohol!!!” It kills bacteria and oil and tightens the skin. ”
“I’ve been using rubbing alcohol since I was a kid and had great skin until high school, but now I don’t do it anymore and I get acne, so I think she’s feeling something.” Maybe,” another woman wrote.
“I’ve been applying rubbing alcohol to my face since I was a teenager. I’m almost 55 years old. I use castor oil on my face and neck and Vaseline cream on my body. Work? I think!’ One comment was read.
Another woman said, “My mother has been doing that with alcohol for years!” People always ask me if she is my sister, she is 53 years old!!”
And others swore through a similar process using different materials.
One woman revealed, “I do this but with glycolic acid!” I don’t even know if it’s good for your skin, but it’s made an amazing difference in my skin texture and acne. ”
Another commenter even shared a conspiracy theory: “Check your liver health!” I know someone who has been applying it to their feet for years and their skin has absorbed it. Doctors said her liver was like a drunkard’s. ”
Dr. Kiran Mian, Board Certified Medical and Cosmetic Dermatologist Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery Speaking to FEMAIL in New York City, the alcohol pads aren’t the only problem with this unique skin care method.
“Avocado oil tends to be highly comedogenic, meaning if you’re prone to acne, avocado oil may contribute to congestion and clogged pores,” advised Dr. Mian.
“Its fatty acid profile includes higher amounts of oleic acid, in addition to palmitic and linoleic acids,” Dr. Mian continued. “Oleic acid can contribute to acne inflammation, but it’s great for maintaining the skin’s barrier.”
“Maybe that’s why this woman’s treatment is working for her,” Dr. Mian thought.
“That being said, most people won’t benefit from this, so I don’t recommend it to my patients.”
“There are so many great cleansers and moisturizers out there!” Dr. Mian explains.
Dr. Margarita Loris, MDThe New Jersey-based board-certified dermatologist and Mohs disease surgeon agreed that this beauty practice is highly questionable.
“Using rubbing alcohol on your face is definitely a no-no. Many dermatologists would even say it’s sacrilegious,” Dr. Loris joked to DailyMail.com. “We also tell our patients to avoid using products that contain alcohol-based toners.”
Dr. Loris said that’s because rubbing alcohol “strips your face of its natural oils, making it very irritating and drying.”
Not only will it dry you out, but it can also make your acne worse.
“Long-term use weakens the skin’s microbiome and barrier, making it more susceptible to environmental damage as well as causing an imbalance of microbiota on the skin,” advised Dr. Loris.
