The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and its Joint Cyber Defense Cooperation (JCDC) AI Tabletop On June 13, we conducted a security incident exercise involving more than 50 AI experts from government agencies and private technology companies.
The four-hour-long exercise was created by JCDC to help develop joint plans and establish operational coordination for cybersecurity incidents using AI-enabled technology.
Authorized by Congress in 2021, the JCDC is described by CISA as a vehicle to “unite cyber defenders from organizations around the world,” with a mission to proactively collect, analyze, and share “actionable cyber risk information to enable synchronized and comprehensive cybersecurity planning, cyber defense, and response.”
The June 13 tabletop exercise “marks another step in our joint efforts to mitigate the risks posed by AI,” CISA Director Jen Easterly said, “and highlights the importance of developing and delivering AI products that are designed with security as a top priority.”
“As the national coordinator for critical infrastructure security and resilience, we are pleased to work with our partners to strengthen this effort to help organizations secure their AI systems,” Easterly added.
Part of the exercise was aimed at supporting the development of an AI Security Incident Collaboration Playbook, led by JCDC and aimed at helping government agencies combat AI-related attacks, which is expected to be released by the end of this year.
The playbook aims to foster collaboration between governments, industry, and global partners to effectively combat AI-powered attacks.
“This exercise demonstrates the FBI’s commitment to leveraging partnerships to enhance our preparedness to address threats in this space,” said Brian Vaughn, assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division.
“We are stronger when we come together to share information and determine best practices in the evolving AI environment,” he said. “We will continue to work extensively across government agencies and with our private sector partners to combat bad actors and protect our infrastructure.”
