Destiny 2
Look, I was hoping that Final Shape would be a good expansion pack to close out the decade-long saga of Destiny 2, but this was not what I expected. The reviews are in and, at least for now, Destiny 2 Final Shape is the highest rated game/release of the year. Open Criticand shared that honor. MetacriticThe breakdown is as follows:
Open Critic:
- Destiny 2 Final Form – 94
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – 93
- Balatoro – 91
- Tekken 8 – 90
- Hades II – 90
- The Last of Us Part II Remaster – 90
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth – 90
- Animal Well – 89
- Paper Mario: Door into the Millennium – 89
- Thorium Infernum – 88
Metacritic
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – 92
- Destiny 2: Final Form – 92
- Animal Well – 91
- Balatoro – 90
- The Last of Us Part II Remaster – 90
- Tekken 8 – 90
- Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition – 89
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth – 89
- Lorelei and the Laser Eyes – 88
- Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
We put Destiny second on the Metacritic list because Final Fantasy has more reviews and it’s harder to keep the average high when there are more scores. The difference in scores between the lists is that Metacritic includes critics that OpenCritic doesn’t. For example, GamesRD’s The Final Shape had a 46/100, which may have dropped the Metacritic score by a few points to tie for first place. Also, one of the lowest scores, Xbox Era’s 7/10, rose about 36 hours after launch because this was before the raid, final campaign mission, and exotic quest were revealed and it was about to be the first review scored live.
Final Form
And of course, to be honest, my review is the average of these. I gave this game a 10/10. The last two I gave this score to were Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty and Elden Ring. So, that’s a high rating. But speaking of Elden Ring, if there’s anything that could take the top spot, it’s probably Shadow of the Erdtree, as it’s a game that’s close to Elden Ring. Elden Ring is a game that got a 95 on its initial release. I’m pretty much expecting that to be exactly what it will be.
But when it comes to major AAA titles? teeth It’s been a slightly lighter year than last year, and I doubt we’ll see as many high-profile 90+ games, but we’ll likely see even fewer 92-94 games like we’ve seen here.
For comparison, Destiny 2’s panned Lightfall expansion received a score of 71. The critically acclaimed Witch Queen expansion received an 88. Forsaken, widely considered the “best” expansion before this one, received an 82. The base release of Destiny 2 received an 84. So, certainly this is territory the game has never reached. Very impressive.
