Health officials have advised against swimming at 41 Long Island beaches after heavy rains caused bacteria levels to exceed state standards.
The advisory is in effect until 5 a.m. Sunday in Suffolk County and 6 a.m. Sunday in Nassau County.
According to the Nassau County Health Department, 18 beaches in Nassau County are regularly affected by storm water runoff from heavy rainfall, which can affect water quality.
The Suffolk County Health Department said 23 of the county’s beaches are located in areas highly affected by storm water runoff from surrounding watersheds and adjacent tributaries, and are located in enclosed bays with limited tidal runoff.
Health officials recommend suspending bathing or other contact with the water until at least 24 hours have passed since the rain has stopped and the water has been flushed for two consecutive tidal cycles, unless sampling reveals elevated levels of bacteria for more than 24 hours.
