A new “wireless device” from Google went through the FCC this morning, and it appears to be a new Nest thermostat.
translation: In addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, it has a 60GHz radar that works in tandem with Soli, which is also found in 2020’s $129.99 Nest Thermostat.
The back of this device has a physical FCC label laser-etched on it, not an electronic version.
In the 2020 model, Google used Soli to light up the display when someone approaches the thermostat, and the radar sensor is also used for home and away routines.
Google is under pressure at this point to release a successor to its high-end Nest Learning Thermostat, but this may just be a refresh of the entry-level model.
It may also be a smart display, but it lacks other sensors (such as the Thread acting as a border router) or the designation that typically ties it to the e-labeled Nest Hub.
A smart speaker is another possibility, but Soli is most useful when paired with a display.
