Bethesda Softworks president Todd Howard said he knows fans are excited for Fallout 5, especially after the success of the Prime Video show, but he’s not interested in rushing the release.
In an interview with the YouTube content creator, Howard spoke about the future of the hit post-apocalyptic RPG series. Matty PlaysHe says Bethesda is spending a lot of time planning how to handle the direction of the franchise.
“As for future Fallout games, obviously I can’t talk about them right now, but I think we need to rush them or release something different from what we’re doing with 76. I don’t think there’s any need to rush it in any way,” he said. “The Fallout TV show fills a particular niche in terms of the franchise and storytelling.”
The last mainline Fallout game was Fallout 4, released in 2015. DLC content for that entry was steadily released for PC and consoles over the following year, with Bethesda releasing a multiplayer-focused spinoff, Fallout 76, in 2018. While fans slowly flocked to the open-world RPG set in West Virginia, it wasn’t until Prime Video’s Fallout TV show premiered that the Bethesda series garnered a new level of attention.
Still, Howard remains adamant about a full-fledged video game release, and for him, it all comes down to wanting to treat the franchise well.
“I completely understand the desire for new types of mainline single-player games,” he added. “And those things take time. I don’t think it’s a bad thing for people to miss something. We just want to do it right and make sure that everything we do with our franchises, whether it’s Elder Scrolls, Fallout, or now Starfield, is a meaningful moment for all of the people who love these franchises as much as we do.”
