The statistics office notes that “the results indicate that, taking into account family composition, families with dependent children spend, on average, 9,731 euros per year more than families without dependent children, which means that average monthly spending is higher by 811 euros.”
Transportation and housing costs were the main factors that contributed to this difference, as the difference between the two types of families in both cases exceeded 100 euros per month, according to the National Institute of Statistics. “Higher spending on restaurants, accommodation, food and education was also observed: an additional 97 euros, an additional 90 euros and 66 euros per month on average, respectively.”
Portuguese families spend, on average, €23,900 per year on their expenses, and this amount varies depending on household composition. Families with two or more dependent children spend the most, with average annual spending exceeding €32,800. In contrast, single-person families are, of course, the ones who spend the least.
However, according to the National Institute of Statistics survey, “average annual expenditure was higher in households with an adult under 65 years of age (€17,105) than in households with an elderly adult (€14,783).”
Religious difference
Regionally, average annual spending was highest in the Lisbon metropolitan area, at €26,891, followed by the Algarve (€24,432 per year). Both were higher than the national average. Average spending in the Nordic region was lower than the national average, but higher than €23,000 (€23,245).
The lowest average regional expenditure was observed in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (€19,431), which also represents the regional expenditure profile furthest from the national average. Followed by Alentejo (€21,359), the Center (€22,222) and the autonomous region of Madeira (€22,605).
