Motorists should expect delays due to emergency lane closures along Route 1 and Interstate 95 in Peabody, Massachusetts, from Sunday into Monday.
Massachusetts Department of Transportation Police announced Sunday afternoon that lanes were being closed for emergency repairs on the bridge.
NBC10 Boston asked why this was necessary and was told it was because debris from the bridge fell from the Interstate 95 bridge floor onto Southbound Highway 1 early Sunday morning.
Bridge inspectors and workers are on scene and repairs are being made.
Lane closures will be in place along Route 1 southbound toward the Lynnfield Tunnel until Monday at 5 a.m. Additionally, the left lane will be closed along I-95 southbound at that location from approximately 7 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. Monday.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said drivers should slow down and use caution.
According to the transport department, the last inspection of the bridge was completed on May 30. The inspection report is in draft stage and has not yet been made official.
The transportation department said all scheduled work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice, as severe weather moved through New England on Sunday but largely avoided Massachusetts.
Crews will remain on site making repairs, which are expected to continue through the night.
