According to a new list from The New York Times, one of the world’s best city beaches is in Marseille, France, while the other is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In a New York Times article titled “Urban Glamour and Sandy Feet: Five Cities with Great Beaches,” outside of popular destinations like Miami, Honolulu, and Sydney, the editors highlighted some urban beach destinations that may be underrated.
“While secluded coastal destinations have enduring appeal, great beach cities offer travelers not only first-class hotels, restaurants and cultural attractions, but also the sand, endless surf and ocean sunsets that make for a great beach vacation,” the report states. “Other coastal destinations are thriving both on land and in the water, and are sure to offer visitors great beach and urban adventures.”
The list spans the globe, with most of the cities on it located on exotic oceans and bays. Only one city from the United States makes the list, and it’s not on either coast – it’s Milwaukee, Wisconsin, located along Lake Michigan in the Midwest.
“Midwestern beachgoers are well known for the scenic beauty of the Lake Michigan shoreline, thanks to our county and state parks. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Chicago’s undeniably spectacular urban beaches,” the list reads. “But Wisconsin’s largest city, Milwaukee, is a must-see for the region’s coast-loving visitors, thanks to its 1,400 acres of waterfront beaches and parks.”
The report also highlights several Milwaukee beaches, including Bradford Beach, which has volleyball courts, frozen custard stands and tiki bars, and South Shore Beach. Tietjen Beach in Doctor’s ParkThe editors describe it as “a semi-isolated refuge with excellent bird watching.”
Milwaukee’s beaches also include those in Istanbul, Turkey; Marseille, France; Busan, South Korea; and San Sebastian, Spain.
