Ah, the eternal dream of emulating the PS3 on a current Sony console. This is a topic that dates back to the very early days of the PS4, when it was confirmed that the previous generation consoles would not be backwards compatible with the games of their predecessors. The topic has been ongoing ever since, and gets piqued whenever a PlayStation patent surfaces or a semi-reliable source brings up the topic.
Rumors have been around for years that Sony is developing an official PS3 emulator, but no concrete evidence has ever surfaced. And now, thanks to recent whispers on social media and elsewhere, things are starting to move again. However, the conversation now has a bit more weight to it, with insider reporter Jeff Grubb commenting on PS3 emulation in his latest article. A morning of game chaos Podcast.
Grubb has reason to believe Sony has been working on this emulation for “quite a while,” adding that he first heard about the idea earlier this year, but initially thought it would be announced sooner. Still, Grubb doesn’t seem to think PS3 emulation is a sure thing: “Obviously it didn’t happen, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. It could happen.”
Whether or not this happens, PS3 emulation is back on the radar, and there’s no getting around the fact that a lot of great games are locked away on Sony’s latest generation system, and it would be a real shame to see it continue like this.
