The Florida Department of Transportation announced that northbound lanes of Interstate 95 will be closed Tuesday night through Wednesday due to continuing work on a design-build project.
Here’s what you need to know:
Where are the closures and where are the alternative routes?
According to FDOT, lanes will be closed between NW 8th Street and NW 17th Street from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to allow crews to move northbound travel lanes to the right side of the road.
Motorists heading north on I-95 who wish to continue northbound should follow these steps:
- Take the Eastbound I-395 ramp
- Exit at NE 2 Avenue/Biscayne Boulevard (Exit 2B).
- Turn right on NE 2 Avenue, then turn right on NE 11 Street.
- Turn right onto NE 1st Avenue and access the ramp to I-95 heading north.
The department added that the ramp from northbound I-95 to westbound SR 836 will also be closed during the same hours.
Drivers who need to travel west on SR 836 should follow these steps:
- Merge onto the eastbound I-395 ramp
- Exit at NE 2 Avenue/Biscayne Boulevard (Exit 2B).
- Turn right onto NE 2nd Avenue
- Turn right onto NE 11th Street
- Turn right on NE 1st Avenue to access westbound I-395, then proceed to westbound SR 836.

Why are these closures necessary?
FDOT said the closure is necessary to establish a new northbound traffic pattern between NW 8th Street and NW 17th Street, which will be in place when the road reopens at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the department, “The work is part of the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project, which will reconstruct the I-395 corridor from the SR 836/I-395/I-95 (Midtown) Interchange to the MacArthur Causeway Bridge, and includes construction of the Signature Bridge over NE 2nd Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard, double decking of SR 836 from NW 17th Avenue west to the Midtown Interchange, and replacement of concrete pavement on I-95 from NW 8th Street to NW 29th Street.”
What is a design-build project?
“The I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project will add capacity, enhance traffic flow and safety, and improve access along I-395, SR 836 and I-95,” FDOT said in a news release.
