Valve is expanding Steam’s already shaky built-in functionality with a new background gameplay recording and sharing system, currently available in beta.
Valve Game Recording Beta PageSteam’s new suite of console-like video features starts with two different recording modes: Background recording mode continuously saves gameplay to a preferred drive (users can set the duration and storage limit), while on-demand recording mode allows users to start and stop recording when they choose.
A new timeline feature and player-added event markers are intended to make it easier to find key moments (achievements, screenshots, and in-game events in supported games can also auto-generate markers if needed), and a new “lightweight” tool allows you to clip your recordings.
There’s also a redesigned recording and screenshot interface that lets users edit and share footage, as well as a one-click share option for posting videos to chat sessions with friends or for the whole world to see. Valve says that recordings can be easily transferred to another device (for example, from Steam Deck to PC), and a temporary link to the MP4 can be sent via the Steam mobile app or a QR code.
And finally, a new Replay mode will be accessible through the Steam overlay in all games, allowing users to quickly look back on their recent gameplay. “This is useful for seeing what went wrong when your hero dies, or remembering what an NPC said earlier,” Valve said.
