Houston – Downtown district residents will no longer see the blue and red high visibility strips on Metro light rail trains, instead seeing gray trains.
but why?
Safety, cleanliness and maintenance were the main factors in Houston Metro’s decision to remove safety stripes and full-body wraps from its buses and trains.
A data analysis by Houston Metro’s safety department did not show that the stripes are an effective safety measure, but officials continue to evaluate other ways to reduce accidents. For the time being, trains will remain gray while maintenance is ongoing.
There will also be an increased police presence and improved lighting along the transit system, which will reportedly allow Metro police to better monitor what’s going on inside trains.
“The safety of our customers and communities is Metro’s top priority. We are working to increase police department presence along our transit system, improve lighting and remove wraps from buses and trains so officers can better monitor what’s going on inside. It is our duty to provide our customers with safer, cleaner and more accessible transportation, and we take that responsibility very seriously,” said Metro Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Bullock.
