It’s been 50 years since Diane von Furstenberg created the wrap dress, but this cultural titan’s presence in the fashion industry is still clearly felt.
To celebrate the anniversary of her work, von Furstenberg recently released a capsule collection featuring silhouettes in a crossword print. Design limited edition sunglasses She partnered with Italian eyewear brand LGR, and also collaborated with Target to launch a massive 200-piece range that ranged from apparel and accessories to home décor, including custom furniture, which unsurprisingly sold out.
She reflected on the history of the film and spoke ahead of the documentary’s premiere: Diane von Furstenberg: A woman of responsibilityThe legendary designer recently spoke to People magazine about how when he first came up with the outfit, he never imagined it would have such a lasting impact.
“When I made that little dress, I never imagined it would become a social phenomenon and that people would be buying it 50 years later,” she says of her famous design.
“I made the wrap dress, but really the wrap dress made me. It just happened. I owe her as much as she owes me,” the 77-year-old author and philanthropist continued.

Von Furstenberg added that the dress was a “vehicle” to celebrate women. “I [her]” says von Furstenberg.
When asked why the product has remained popular for so many years, she speculates, “I think it’s successful because it gives women confidence.”
Von Furstenberg says she sees women wearing her wrap dresses “all the time” when she’s out and about, and she shared that her best style tip is to “be yourself.”
She continues, “It’s not about trying to be someone you’re not. Embrace your imperfections and they become your assets. And I say it again: you don’t deserve more than that.”

In the documentary that was first released, Tribeca Film Festival Debut on June 5th Hulu in the US In the video, which will be released internationally on Disney+ on June 25th, von Furstenberg can be seen gracefully climbing into a sink and applying moisturizer to her bare face, providing a close-up look at her skin.
It’s a striking moment that encapsulates her thoughts on beauty and aging.
“I’ve never done hair or makeup. [the documentary]” von Furstenberg explains.
“The point is, I think people are too afraid of getting older. But getting older is a good thing. Getting older is proof that you’ve already lived. I never thought I’d reach the age I have. I thought I’d be dead by 30, because I’d accomplished so much by 28. So instead of asking, ‘How old are you?’ I say you should ask, ‘How many years have you lived?’ And suddenly you can answer with pride.”
