An American Airlines passenger was forced to check his carry-on bag at the gate, but was nearly run over and destroyed by a truck.
The frustrated traveler went to baggage claim to retrieve his suitcase, where he was informed that his suitcase had been “hit”. Shared on Reddit.
“But…it was actually a mess,” the passenger wrote. “Everything except clothing was completely destroyed and all my clothes were dirty.”
Photos shared by travelers showed that the inside of the luggage, which included clothes, shoes and other items, was covered in powdered cosmetics and had been crushed into pieces.
“I didn’t know what to do and just started crying (I know it’s stupid, but I was in a strange city and literally had nothing but my phone and a bunch of dirty clothes),” she said. Ta.
The woman’s Invisalign retainer was also damaged in the impact, and she said she was worried the airline wouldn’t cover the additional cost of a dentist visit to have it replaced.
She said friendly staff at baggage claim helped her claim the damaged items and she was given a new carry-on bag. “But…what should I put in it??” she added.
Other Redditors recommended creating a detailed bulleted list of all items destroyed and their costs.
One mechanic commenter said the airline passenger’s bag was likely run over by a work truck on the tarmac.
The engineers admitted that they too had driven on top of the cargo.
“One night it was raining so hard that all the lights seemed so bright to my eyes that the stupid mixture of asphalt and concrete seemed like it was going to turn into a black hole, and I went to work with my colleagues as usual. “I was driving a commercial truck to an overnight flight,” they wrote. “There’s definitely a weird noise coming from the front end.”
Their colleagues ignored it, they said, believing it was just “part of a work truck.”
The Redditor said he stopped the truck after driving another 100 feet.
“Sure enough, the standard black general-purpose bag is basically wedged under the front of the truck like any other luggage,” they wrote. “It looked very similar to the OP photo above, but the top was a little worn.”
Mechanics issued a warning to many travelers carrying common black luggage.
“This black bag [are] It’s impossible to see on this rainy night,” they said. “It’s just an accident. You fell off the cart. You’ll be picked up by another vehicle.”
Just two days ago, a Delta Airlines passenger I shared a photo of my checked baggage. It was being heavily shredded and torn up on Reddit.
