Not everyone who wonders has desires. Some of us will be lining up in an orderly waiting room at One Apple Park Way on Tuesday morning. On September 12th at 10am PT, Tim Cook and others will be showing off their latest gear for the holiday season.
Two things we can confidently say will be on display at Apple’s big events are the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9. There are several things in this world that you can actually configure your smartwatch with. Of course, there were various rumors. First, some members of the AirPods family are starting to get long in the tooth.
Macs have endless possibilities too. I think it speaks for most of us when I say I wish he got a little more face-to-face with the Vision Pro headset that made headlines at WWDC in June.
What follows is a mix of what we know, what we think we know, and what we frankly and wildly speculate.
iPhone15
This time it’s a clear highlight announcement. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the iPhone 15 is the effort Apple has put into it. It’s not like everyone on a big glass spaceship was rushing to adopt USB-C (or Thunderbolt 3, or whatever you want to call it). For this he can thank EU regulators. Last year, the European Parliament voted to standardize ports across devices.
Now, technically, these regulators have given manufacturers until the end of 2024 to implement this technology into a variety of devices, but all signs point to Apple lifting the Band-Aid on the iPhone 15. It shows. Notably, more local governments are poised to comply with this regulation. The EU is leading here for consumer advocacy and e-waste-related reasons.
Last September marked 10 years since Apple forced the use of the Lightning connector. But when it comes to Lightning, it’s bad and I hate it. My colleague hates it. Friends and family hate it. My rabbit likes it, but will happily chew through any cable, no matter what’s on either end. The point is, it’s bad, and it’s always bad.
An interesting note here This is the report Faster USB 3.2 data speeds are reserved for the Pro model only, leaving the stock iPhone 15 at USB 2.0 (still a common spec in the Android world).
Meanwhile, wireless charging is said to be boosted to 35W overall. The iPhone appears to be one of the first phones to use the Qi2 standard, which combines wireless charging with magnets. This is something Apple has been working on for some time. Considering Apple is one of his 344 companies in the Wireless Power Consortium (and all of the Qi2 iPhone accessories announced at IFA), this feels like a safe bet.
Meanwhile, Dynamic Island, introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, should gradually make its way to cheaper models as well.
Another interesting addition is the iPhone 15 Ultra, which is rumored to replace the Pro Max and adopt Apple’s recent naming convention. The device is said to feature a 6.7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, slimmer bezels, and a new “action” button to replace the long standard mute. The new buttons from the Apple Watch Ultra will also look great on the iPhone 15 Pro. It is said to offer a variety of customizable shortcuts to the camera, accessibility options, flashlight, actual shortcuts app (if you want to get creative), and more.
apple watch series 9
Speaking of Apple Watch. In fact, rumors are mostly silent here. This could indicate a relatively weak year for wearables. Also, next year he will be a big 1-0 match, so Apple wait until next year Pull out all stops. We’ll also likely have to wait for the new Apple Watch SE to arrive next year.
With that said, it looks like we’re getting a new Apple Watch Ultra next week. Both Ultra 2 and Series 9 could get new processors and colors. There’s also talk that Apple is turning to his 3D printing for case design after adopting his 3D printing process for elements of the Vision Pro. However, I think there’s still a big problem with scale when it comes to something mass-market like the Apple Watch.
AirPods
We feel like it’s the perfect time to launch new AirPods. That said, it seems likely that we won’t see the H2 chip in our headphones until 2024. However, a standalone His USB-C charging case may be considered for sale. It’s been a little over three years since he got AirPods Max. By the way, I won’t be mad at the new HomePod mini.
everything else
A closer look at Vision Pro seems almost certain. There’s still a big question mark over content, and seeing how “spatial computing” headsets hit the market early next year, this could be the year of the demo. Almost nothing got in the way of the game. Now that the SDK and Unity development platform have been around for a while, that seems like a distinct possibility.
It may be helpful to learn more about iOS/macOS/iPadOS/watchOS release dates. However, the arrival of the Mac seems to be a little further away this time, and the M3 is much more likely to arrive in his 2024.
Apple event starts at September 12th at 10am PT. We’ll be there and bring you live.
