There are many things that I thought were signs of wealth as a child that became part of life in the trenches as an adult. When I was eating fast food, I felt indulgence and pleasure with every bite. Right now I just feel broken and have heartburn. There’s nothing special about eating the $1 menu and taking antacids. When I saw this thread, I was happy to be able to relate to the sense of wonder and whimsy I had as a child. Ask Reddit where u/SinkingFeelingBruh I asked, “When you were a kid, what did you think was flashy that wasn’t?” Below are some of my favorite and most relatable answers. 1.
“When I was a kid, I thought going to a restaurant and getting a club sandwich was the height of sophistication. I thought those little toothpicks with the plastic frills that held the sandwich in place were so chic. .” 2.
“In my day, kids who had 120 colored pencils or crayons were considered part of society’s elite.” 3.
“Shirley Temple. I remember when my parents would take us to ‘fancy’ restaurants and we could order them. The thin straw and maraschino cherry made me feel very grown up. ” Four.
“If your house was two stories high, I thought you were rich.” Five.
“Sun-dried tomatoes. They just taste like luxury! They’re not carefully arranged on a sun-drenched Italian balcony, as I imagine when I eat them, but actually grown in a factory under powerful ultraviolet rays. I’m sure it’s been dried.” 6.
“Refrigerator with built-in ice dispenser.” 7.
“When I was younger, I used to call brands like Adidas ‘designer’. I was clearly wrong, but as a kid who only bought copy brands, that was very aspirational.” 8.
“I thought a paper crown from a fast food restaurant was the pinnacle of royal fashion. Little did I know that I was just one step away from going to a banquet!” 9.
“Shrimp. Whenever my brother and I did well or had any reason to celebrate, my father would take us to Red Lobster or Long John Silver’s. I had shrimp, which I thought was an absolute luxury.” 11.
“There are many different types of bottled water, including distilled water, purified water, and spring water. I was drinking fresh spring water from a glacier and thought, ‘Damn, this is so gourmet.’ ” 13.
“My friends had kitchens full of junk food like Captain Crunch, Twinkies, Ding Dongs. I thought it was so chic and I was so jealous. My mom cooked from scratch every day. I “We felt so neglected.” “Because my mother never bought us such things to eat. We are very lucky. Thank you, Mother.” 14.
“TV dinners! I thought they were haute cuisine because I could only eat them when my cousins were spending the night. Now I feel nauseous thinking about those watery, tasteless frozen dinners.” 15.
“Hummus is only served at fancy parties, so I knew it was something special.” 16.
“I once filled out a survey saying I had recently experienced fine dining because I ate at Olive Garden.” 17.
“Local Chinese buffet. The most exotic thing about my hometown in relatively rural Tennessee.” 18.
“For some reason, when I was a kid, I thought gray poupon was an expensive delicacy made by the French. I imagined some stylish guy in a gray wig slathering it on a baguette. I thought it was something only rich people could eat. It’s just mustard.” 19.
And finally, the most common answer by far is: “Ferrero Rocher! It turns out it’s not just for Christmas. You can buy and eat it anytime.” What’s something you thought was super fancy when you were a kid, but later realized it wasn’t as sophisticated as you thought? Let us know in the comments!
