The Bureau of Money Exchange (BDC) operator has announced the suspension of operations in Abuja citing unavailability of dollars.
The association’s president Malam Abdullahi Dawlan announced this in the capital on Wednesday.
He attributed the development to online commerce and cryptocurrencies.
Daurau said the business suspension will take effect from Thursday, February 1, 2024.
The development came hours after a Senate committee summoned the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, over the currency crisis.
The summons was made through the Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions chaired by Senator Antetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos).
Senator Abiru disclosed this in a conversation with reporters after a closed committee meeting on Wednesday.
He said the committee, during its meeting, took the decision to summon the Supreme Bank Governor next Tuesday to brief MPs on the economy and what is being done to address the naira value crisis. .
Senator Abiru said the state of the economy, especially the inflation index, was a major concern for the members.
he said: “We have discussed it among ourselves. Now that the important issues have been addressed, we believe the next action will be to summon the central bank governor at 3pm on Tuesday and have him properly briefed on the state of the economy. .
“We will resolve this and communicate this to the central bank governor and then have further communication with the press.”
The naira continued to fall on Tuesday, dropping to an all-time low of 1,482.57 naira to the dollar on demand in the official market.
