Foldable smartphones are also on sale, 5 years, the device is still trying to justify itself. And I’ve been using my folding screen laptop as my main PC for about 4 weeks now, and I’m not sure if it’s ready for prime time.
I end my time with HP’s first foldable laptop feeling excited about the future of laptops. We believe the future of laptops will benefit from a resurgence of creative ideas that accommodate the unique ways people use their computers. But I seriously question whether the benefits of a 17-inch screen in a 12-inch laptop body are worth the trade-offs inherent in today’s foldable PCs.
Early participants in the foldable laptop world will have the opportunity to define that space, while consumers can decide if it’s what they want. HP’s foldable is the most beefed-up option to date, and after using it for a few weeks, I have a good idea of what I want and don’t want to see when things go away.
At the end of the day, the question I’m facing when it comes to foldable laptops is, “Why this and not a clamshell or 2-in-1 laptop?”
Pricing pitfalls
Like it or not, laptop makers are building a market for PCs with foldable OLED screens. ASUS will release its first foldable PC in 2022. Lenovo Number 2 Folding PCs are now available for purchase, and LG has announced a folding laptop for South Korea. And now the HP Specter Foldable 17 is here. Windows 11 helps make these products possible with unique multi-screen setups and intuitive Snap Layouts.
At the time of this writing (and initial release), HP’s foldable devices are surprisingly expensive. $5,000. Because foldable PCs are young and flashy, they automatically come with higher price tags than similarly specced laptops in traditional form factors, but $5,000 is not typical for a foldable PC. Asus’ Zenbook 17 Fold OLED debuted at $3,500, and Lenovo’s 16-inch ThinkPad X1 Fold debuted at $3,500. $2,500.
HP will no doubt be happy if executives and well-endowed tech enthusiasts get their hands on the Specter Fold, but this device is less about pushing a unit and more about what a folding PC is like. It feels like you are interested in proving it.
In this article, we take a closer look at HP’s successes, misses, and how the Specter Fold could impact the future of foldable laptops with its revolutionary foldable laptop. .
17 inch laptop in a 12 inch body
For those who use laptops as their primary computing device or for multitasking, a large screen that fits into a small space is appealing. But it’s hard to find a 17-inch laptop that you can comfortably carry around, especially since many laptops in this size class have discrete GPUs. Foldable laptops promise new opportunities for laptop users who dream of ultimate portability without sacrificing screen space.
