Cleveland, Ohio – Air Canada It will end direct service between Cleveland and Toronto, a short-haul flight that many northeast Ohio travelers use to connect to destinations in Europe, Asia and across Canada.
The airline said it was suspending the route for “commercial reasons” and a source said the airline was having problems with aircraft availability.
Air Canada flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport to at least five other U.S. cities, including Columbus, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Hartford, will also be suspended.
The suspension will begin Oct. 13. An Air Canada spokesman said the airline will resume service in early May.
According to the airport, Air Canada has been operating the route for decades, since at least 1990.
Most of the Cleveland travelers who board the flight are not continuing to Toronto, which is an easy five-hour drive from northeastern Ohio, but rather are using the route as the first leg of a longer trip. From Toronto, Air Canada flies to more than 70 international destinations, including cities in Asia, Europe, South America and North America.
Air Canada currently operates three times a day from Cleveland to Toronto using 76-seat Bombardier CJR-900 aircraft. This is the airline’s only route in Cleveland.
Air Canada’s departure from Hopkins will, at least temporarily, bring the number of airlines at the airport back down to 10. Earlier this year, Sun Country Airlines launched a new route between Cleveland and Minneapolis, becoming the airport’s 11th airline.
