American Airlines plane veers off the runway and crashes into grass at Rochester Airport

An American Airlines plane veered off the runway while landing. Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport Thursday, coming to rest in the snow-covered grass just off the side of the road.
Monroe County Communications Director Gary Walker said in a statement that none of the 50 passengers and three crew members were injured.
Walker said the plane was coming from Philadelphia and landed just before 4 p.m., but the cause of the accidental landing has not yet been determined.

Michael Trickey, one of the passengers, said the plane had landed and appeared to slow down for a turn when it slid off the pavement.
“There was also a very sudden jolt. It was like a huge jolt that just moved everyone back and forth,” Trickey said by phone while waiting to get off the plane.
Walker said passengers will be transported to the terminal by bus.
After several days of snow and frigid temperatures in Rochester, Tricky wondered if the tarmac was being properly maintained.
“I feel lucky right now,” Trickey said. “I’m glad you’re safe…I just want to go home.”
