A pilot who was scheduled to fly a United Airlines plane from Scotland to Newark, New Jersey, had his flight canceled Saturday and was instead handcuffed after airport security found a Taser in his bag. .
The unidentified United employee, 56, was arrested and taken away by four security guards at Edinburg Airport on Saturday. An eyewitness told Edinburgh Live.
The US-born pilot was charged with firearms offenses as possession of a Taser is illegal in the UK.
His arrest left many passengers who had hoped to return to New Jersey that morning frustrated, as their 9:25 a.m. flight was quickly canceled.
It’s unclear how many people were scheduled to take off on the flight, but the scheduled Boeing 757 plane can seat about 170 passengers.
United Airlines confirmed that the pilot had been “removed from duty.”
“This employee was immediately removed from duty and we are fully cooperating with local authorities,” the airline told the Saturday Post.
Police Scotland also confirmed the pilot’s arrest and said a report would be submitted to the country’s Procurator Fiscal.
The pilot is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.
The arrest of the unnamed pilot comes after a flight attendant for another U.S. airline was arrested by federal authorities this week.
An American Airlines flight attendant has been arrested on suspicion of recording multiple girls using a hidden camera in the bathroom.
