SR 529 north from Everett to Marysville is closed because someone dug a tunnel under the road, creating a large hole in the highway.
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews had no idea what they were dealing with when they rushed to State Highway 529 near the Union Slough Bridge this morning. All they knew was that there was a large hole in the road.

“There was a 12-inch by 12-inch hole on the surface and when we looked more closely underneath it we found it to be three feet deep and four feet wide. This was caused by someone digging a tunnel under the roadway,” Washington State Department of Transportation spokesman James Poling told KIRO News Radio.

The highway was fully closed for emergency maintenance just before 9 a.m. Tuesday and remained closed as of press time.
Crews found debris in the hole but no suspects were found. WSP is currently investigating the scene.
“We don’t know the motive for what the hole was made for, but we do know it was made intentionally,” Poling said. “This is not something that is normal in our roadway structures or bridge approach structures.”
There is no indication as to when the road will reopen.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
