Apple announced Saturday that it will issue a software update to address customer complaints that the latest iPhone 15 models, released about a week ago, run hot.
Apple said a combination of bugs in iOS 17, app bugs, and temporary setup periods are causing new iPhone models to run unstable.
An Apple spokesperson told CNBC:
“We’ve identified several conditions that can cause iPhone operating temperatures to be higher than expected. The first few days after setting up or restoring your device, there is increased activity in the background. Your device may feel warm. We also found the following bug in iOS 17, which affects some users and will be resolved in a software update. Another issue could be caused by a third-party It involves a recent update to an app that is causing the system to overload. We are working with these app developers to fix it.”

Instead, Apple points out bugs in specific apps and bugs in iOS that can be fixed with software updates. Apple said the upcoming iOS 17 update that addresses this issue will not reduce device performance.

So far, the new iPhones appear to be selling well, with long lines forming outside Apple Stores on release day as the devices take several weeks to ship.
