If it feels like it’s only been a few days since you updated your iPhone, that’s because it actually was. An unexpected iOS 17.1.2 iPhone update has arrived on his Thursday, November 30, 2023. The next release is coming out in less than two weeks and all users are being warned to update now.
This update, iOS 17.2, wasn’t a surprise as it has been through a beta release, but it still had some unexpected elements. That means he was released a day earlier than many expected.
Here’s what it is and how you can get it right away.
Which iPhones can run iOS 17.2?
Like all releases since iOS 17 arrived in September, this new update is compatible with all iPhones released since 2018. That means iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, iPhone XR from 2018 onwards, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and all variations of iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 15. . Also includes 2nd and 3rd generation models of iPhone SE.
how to get
Open your iPhone’s Settings app, click General, then click Software Update. Here you will find sections about automatic updates and beta updates. You can choose to download new software now, regardless of whether you have automatic updates turned on or off. Select “Download and Install” and your iPhone is ready to use.
Release contents
Unlike the past few updates, which were all about bug fixes and security measures, iOS 17.2 brings a lot of new features in addition to the usual bug-busting effects. Chief among them is a new journal app that helps you write about what’s happening to you. It’s designed to help improve your health, is amazingly integrated into your iPhone, and all your private entries are securely encrypted and remain only for your eyes.
Speaking of integration, with this release Apple has added the ability to shoot video in a specific way that integrates with Apple’s next big product category: Apple Vision Pro headsets. This update enables iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to shoot spatial videos. These videos play in 3D on your headset. I watched these videos on a headset and they looked great. However, it plays in regular 2D on the iPhone.
Also, only on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, there’s a new shortcut for the action button that replaces the mute/ringtone slider on previous iPhones. You can now set it to “Translate”, so you can easily have a conversation in a foreign language without opening the app.
Improvements to Messages include customizing the body shape of your Memoji, stickers to add to messages as reactions, and improved security to protect against spyware. Message input and other features have been updated to allow you to turn off predictions inline. However, I personally like this feature.
AirDrop has been enhanced. Similar to NameDrop (which, despite all the fuss last week, is completely safe), you can now share boarding passes and movie tickets just by having two iPhones. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 also have support for Qi2 chargers, which was not supported previously.
Default notification sounds, previously limited to text, email, and calendar alerts, are now much more customizable.

Updated on December 12th. Alongside the release of the update, Apple announced more details about spatial video capture on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
in Newsroom posts, Apple specified how its two latest Pro handsets are now capable of recording spatial video, calling this “a great way for users to capture life’s precious moments with Apple Vision Pro, which launches next year.” “This is a groundbreaking new feature that will help you review your content.” Greg Jozwiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, describes these videos as “magical.” Like most companies, Apple has a tendency to exaggerate, but there’s something truly extraordinary about these videos. I saw this at a Vision Pro demonstration a few months ago. These have an element of surprise, and I think potential customers who see them will immediately reach for their credit cards.
Apple has provided further details on how the recording works, explaining that it will be captured at 1080p resolution, 30 frames per second frame rate, and standard dynamic range. The 3D effect, which is very convincing when you watch videos played on Vision Pro, is created by simultaneously shooting the video with two of the iPhone’s cameras: the main lens and the ultra-wide-angle lens.
This is smart. The two cameras have sensors with different focal lengths and different resolutions (48 million pixels for the main camera and 12 million pixels for the ultra-wide camera). Combining them into one video is complicated, but it’s accomplished by the iPhone “scaling the ultra-wide camera’s field of view to match the main camera’s field of view, then saving it into a single video file.”
As mentioned above, when you play these files on your iPhone or iPad, for example, you just see a regular 2D video. This reduces the element of surprise, but increases playback compatibility. Remember that in Vision Pro, these are displayed life-sized, either as a large window or as an immersive environment that surrounds most of the user.
Apple sees this as a way to record memories. Well, as with all photos and videos, this is a comprehensive and great way to revisit your memories.
