ROG Ally with Ryzen Z1 non-Extreme processor now available
ASUS releases handheld based on Ryzen Z1.
Shortly after Steam announced a temporary price reduction for its Steam Deck console, ASUS announced a more affordable version of its ROG Ally handheld device. They announced this model with a small AMD Phoenix APU in June, but it was expected to be released late in the third quarter. As of now, this launch is complete and depending on the region and retailer, the console will either ship or be available for pre-order.
RC71L-Z1512 is powered by Ryzen Z1 processor with 6-core Zen4/Zen4c APU and 4 RDNA3 compute units. This represents a significant drop in GPU performance compared to the 8-core Zen4 and 12 CU RDNA3 Ryzen Z1 Extreme. However, the price is $100 less. It’s worth noting that both consoles come with 512 GB of storage, and there’s currently no word on the availability of 256 GB or 1 TB models.

The ROG Ally console features a 7-inch 120Hz display with 1080p resolution. Since they are built on AMD hardware, they offer support for AMD FreeSync Premium, FSR (FidelityFX) and RSR (Radeon) Super Resolution technologies. This platform comes with 16 GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory and cannot be manually upgraded. ASUS does not currently offer larger memory options.
Similar to the Ryzen Z1 Extreme variant, the Z1 model also supports XG Mobile external GPU support. This unique connector can be used with ASUS-supplied external graphics, which are considerably more expensive than the console itself. However, it may be a viable option for users who require a robust docking solution to improve the performance of high-resolution external monitors.
