Redding will lose air service to Hollywood-Burbank, a popular destination for upstate families who often fly for trips to Universal Studios and Disneyland.
Avero Airlines spokeswoman Madison Jones told Record Searchlight on Tuesday afternoon that the service will end on Aug. 26.
“We recently learned that a business partner who supported Avero’s airport operations at Redding Regional Airport (RDD) will no longer provide services to RDD,” Jones said in an emailed statement. “This decision will allow Avero to better utilize resources elsewhere in our system.”
The announcement came after a Shasta County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, where Jared Culver, general manager of Trego Dugan Aviation, which handles ground services for Avero Airlines in Redding, said the company will pull out of California later this summer.

“I came here because I felt like the air service issue here needed a little more attention and I hope the board will be interested in looking at the air service concerns,” Culver told supervisors.
Supervisor Chris Kellstrom asked supervisors at the next board meeting to discuss what the county can do to help Avero maintain flights from Redding to Burbank. Kellstrom’s motion passed unanimously.
“I think time is of the essence, so I think we need to reach out to Avero Airlines and let them know the county is ready to assist them and we want to keep them here,” Kellstrom said.
Culver told the Record Searchlight after the meeting that he could not speak on behalf of Avero Airlines.
A Record Searchlight reporter later emailed Jones, the Avero spokesman, seeking comment, and he confirmed that the flight to Hollywood-Burbank had been canceled.

Avero Airlines, which operates twin-engine 737s, began service from Redding to Hollywood Burbank Airport in May 2021. It also operated flights to Las Vegas for about a year but suspended those services in December 2022.
Culver said the company’s services include checking in, loading baggage onto the plane and cleaning the aircraft. “We strive to have at least 10 employees on staff at all times,” he said.
Culver said he had heard that Avero had tried to find another “ground crew member” after learning Trego Dugan was leaving but was unsuccessful.
Culver said he didn’t know the specific reasons why Trego Dugan was leaving California.
Reading Deputy Mayor Steve Bade said he had tried to contact Avero to ask if there was anything the city could do to keep the airline operating but had not received a response.
Both Culver and Bade said they had heard Avero had tried but failed to sign a deal with another ground-service operator.
“One of the tough business decisions for ultra-low-cost airlines is that the airline industry is so expensive that they have limited options for how to get the service and still keep prices down,” Baid said.
