A 10-year-old boy from Maryland bitten by a shark at a resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, authorities said.
The attack occurred Monday afternoon while the child was “participating in an expedition on Shark Tank at a local resort,” according to a news release from the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
Paradise Island is home to several resorts, including the expansive Atlantis Resort. Police have not identified the resort where the attack occurred.
Police said the boy was bitten on the right leg and taken to the hospital, where his condition is stable.
The victim has not been identified and police have not released details about the type of shark involved in the attack. Police have not responded to CNN’s requests for further information.
The U.S. State Department is “aware of reports that a U.S. citizen minor was injured in Nassau, Bahamas,” a State Department spokesperson said in a statement.
“We are extremely concerned about the victimization of American citizens abroad and stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” the spokesperson said. “Due to privacy concerns, we will not be commenting further.”
