Dear Editor, I applaud Joe Humphreys’ attempt to offer comfort to alopecia-stricken Frank Lampard through philosophical insight (Unthinkable, 24 June).
He outlines three approaches that might offer comfort to those facing a future that is more hairless than glamorous, but makes no mention of the pleasure that might come from using one’s baldness as unshakable evidence in a philosophical argument.
One of the oldest philosophical insights, propounded long before the Stoics first took hold, is that of Heraclitus. Around 500 BCE, he famously remarked that “panta rei” – “everything flows.” I can now directly disprove this claim by citing the fact that my hair no longer flows – you, etc.
