A popular beet juice supplement can lower blood pressure and improve health in people with serious lung disease, a new study has found.
Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who took a beet juice supplement daily for 12 weeks lowered their blood pressure and increased the distance they could walk in six minutes. SWNS report.
Apostolos Bossios, President of the European Respiratory Society Airway Diseases Congress, said: “As COPD cannot be cured, there is an urgent need to help patients live as well as possible with their condition and reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. “It’s happening,” he said.
COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, affects approximately 400 million people worldwide.
Inflammatory lung disease causes difficulty breathing, severely limits the ability to be physically active, and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
The results of the latest study, conducted by researchers at Imperial College London, were published in the journal Tuesday. European Respiratory Journal.
Researchers tested a concentrated beetroot juice supplement that was high in nitrates compared to a beetroot juice placebo that looked and tasted the same but had the nitrates removed.
“Higher nitrate levels in the blood may increase the availability of nitric oxide, a chemical that helps blood vessels relax,” said Professor Nicholas Hopkinson, who led the study.
“It also makes your muscles more efficient, which means they need less oxygen to do the same work,” he explained.

In the Imperial College study, 81 COPD patients treated at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital were randomly given either nitrate-rich beetroot supplements or a placebo.
Researchers found that those who took the nitrate-rich supplement had significantly lower systolic blood pressure and walked an average of 98 feet farther in six minutes than those who took a placebo.
“At the end of the study, we found that people who consumed the nitrate-rich beet juice drink had lower blood pressure and less stiff blood vessels,” Hopkinson said.
“This is one of the longest studies in this field to date,” he added. “The results are very promising, but need to be confirmed in large-scale, long-term studies.”
