Educators and parents are very concerned about WhatsApp’s new channels feature. Essentially, it turns your messaging app into a social media platform, giving users access to everything the internet has to offer.
In the midst of controversy, I think it’s important to take a step back and consider the broader picture. Simply unsubscribing everyone from his WhatsApp may not be the ultimate solution to the concerns we are facing.
While concerns about inappropriate content and unsolicited messages are (partially) valid (in part because WhatsApp’s content restrictions may not be fully aligned with our values), It is important to realize that these issues should not affect a regular frum yid for a simple reason. Most paid filters already block channel functionality, and the remaining filters are actively working on implementing such blocks.
It is written that Hashem prepares a cure before a blow, before a disease, as is also evident in this incident.
It is well known that all Fram YIDs, regardless of chassis level, require a robust internet filter. There are no exceptions to this rule. This is not just my personal opinion. Any honest rav would confirm that you need a filter from a bad breath standpoint.
Moreover, when comparing what these channels offer with unfiltered devices, the contrast is striking. For example, consider the difference between an irregularly updated channel about movies (meaning random photos and captions) and unlimited access to an entire library of unfiltered movie streaming on your device. .
Some might argue that’s not the case, since you already use WhatsApp so much that it’s hard to avoid it. However, the same problem occurs with ads if you don’t use filters. Even without filters, you can easily access the worst content within seconds.
It’s ironic that some people who were previously fine with having unlimited access to explicit and harmful content on their devices are suddenly encouraging others to leave WhatsApp. Let’s be responsible and do what we should already be doing: filtering our devices.
Some may argue that current filters are not blocking channels. Well, maybe it’s time to upgrade your filters? Just like you might replace a broken air conditioner filter or upgrade to a new cell phone when needed, consider investing in filters that align with your values. TAG offers a number of cost-effective filtering solutions that address these issues. Furthermore, maintaining our values as Frum yidden comes at a price. We are willing to pay for kosher meat without compromising on cost. Let’s prioritize protecting our online experiences too.
Saying everyone should quit WhatsApp is like saying no one should use a website. Instead, use tools in a protected and safe manner. Just as having a filtered browser allows you to do a lot of good things without distractions, just having a filtered phone can help you use WhatsApp to your benefit.
