- Potions and Elixirs provide health, mana recovery, increased mental strength, enemy damage, and armor boosts.
Higher professional level World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Recipes for gear, accessories and consumables have been overhauled: Alchemists who mix herbs, magic items and even fish to create a variety of concoctions can now reach the new “Glorious Grandmaster” level.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic – All Starting Zones, Ranked
In the wake of World of Warcraft Classic: Cataclysm, several starting areas have been upgraded and two new areas have been added to the game.
While alchemy is primarily about making potions and elixirs, this profession also involves transmuting gems, creating alchemy stones, and has recipes for epic mounts. Some of these recipes can be used to hone your alchemy skill, while others can only be made at maximum level.
7 Wonder Drug
Not so magical, but very useful
- Alchemy Level: 470
- Materials needed: Deep Stone Oil
- effect: Recovers 0-50,000 HP and 0-20,000 Mana.
The only thing really “mystical” about this potion is exactly how much health and/or mana it restores, or if it restores anything at all. It’s possible that this weird potion restores nothing, but that’s not usually the case. Finding a potion that restores both at this level is unusual and awesome.
Deepstone Oil is made from the Albino Cave Fish that live on the ocean floor of Deepholm. Visit the Fishing Trainer on your way to the Alchemist. This oil is a key ingredient in this and several other recipes.
6 Ghost Elixir
Useful for priests, mages, and other magic users
- Alchemy Level: 450
- Materials needed: Cinderbloom
- effect: Increase Spirit by 225 for 1 hour
The Ghost Elixir recipe is one of the first recipes most new prestigious alchemists learn, making it a great choice for those getting started in alchemy. Because Spirit is a mana regenerating stat, it can be used by any casting class and only requires one ingredient.

If you are trying to get Embersilk in World of Warcraft Cataclysm Classic, this guide will help you.
Cinderbloom is a common ingredient in several alchemy recipes and can be obtained by herbalists in some locations in Mount Hyjal and the Twilight Highlands. If your character isn’t a herbalist or isn’t in the mood for farming, this is one of the cheaper ingredients you can buy.
Five Death Blood Venom
Primarily for close combatants
- Alchemy Level: 455
- Materials needed: Stormvine
- effect: Enemies hit in melee will take 2000 damage and have a chance to Poison them for 8 seconds.
Most alchemists see this potion as merely a leveling tool, mainly because it only requires one ingredient and is one of the first recipes a new Renowned Grandmaster will learn. This is partially true, as Stormvine can be obtained in several locations and is not too expensive if the player wishes to purchase it.
On the other hand, for characters looking to gain an advantage in close combat, this is an extremely useful potion, and for tanks looking for extra offensive power against multiple enemies, this potion can be the difference between life and death.
Four Volcano Potion
Great for classes that use the Intelligence stat
- Alchemy Level: 460
- Materials needed: Cinderbloom, Azshara’s Veil
- effect: Increases Intelligence by 1200 for 25 seconds
Warlocks and Mages are the people who benefit most from Volcanic Potions, so even if you don’t have access to an Alchemist to make them, they’re still a valuable trade item. This is a niche market that mostly appeals to raiders, so keep some in your guild bank just for social cred.

If you need help earning Guardians of Hyjal reputation in World of Warcraft Cataclysm Classic, this guide will provide you with some helpful tips.
Other reasons to start with this potion are that it only requires two herbs and has a fairly low skill level. After making some Ghost Elixirs to hone their skills, an alchemist can progress to Volcanic Potion with any remaining Cinderbloom.
3 Potion of Illusion
Just for fun
- Alchemy Level: 460
- Materials needed: Azshara’s Veil, Unstable Life
- effect: Change your character to a different race for 2 minutes
Made from a mixture of rare herbs and volatile elements, it’s not exactly easy to make, but even without any combat advantages, the magical potion is hard to resist. The only effect of the potion is to transform the player’s character into another Azerothian race for two minutes, including characters from the opposing faction.
Volatile Life is one of the easier elemental materials to find, especially for miners and herbalists, as it drops from farming nodes. Alternatively, you can purchase it, but it is by far the cheapest of the new volatile elements.
2 Elixir of the Abyss
- Alchemy Level: 475
- Materials needed: Heart Blossom
- effect: Increases Armor Class by 900 for 1 hour
This sounds like the kind of thing players would learn in Deepholm, but could easily be learned from an alchemy trainer. This is great for tanks and melee combatants who take the most physical damage, but casters can also use it, and healers will always need extra armor.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic – Best New Recipes for Famed Chefs (And How to Get Them)
Want to level up your Illustrious Cooking and get new recipes in WoW’s Cataclysm expansion? Here’s how.
Elixir of the Abyss is a common addition to most leveling guides. It only requires one other ingredient to craft besides the regular crystal vial, and is valuable on the auction house if the alchemist can’t use it themselves.
1 Deep Stone Oil
An essential material for rare mounts
- Alchemy Level: 470
- Materials needed: Albino Cave Fish
- effect: The official description is that it “may cause stiffness,” but it has a variety of random effects.
This one also falls into the rare mount category. It’s interesting that the alchemy recipe ended up being an essential component of one of the hardest mounts to find in the game. Deepstone Oil itself is one of those wacky potions with random effects, similar to Noggenfogger Elixir, but it’s also used to create Sand Vial, an epic quality recipe.
The Sand Vial doesn’t simply summon a mount, it transforms the player into a mount – specifically, it transforms the player into a flying dragon that can ride other players. There is no other mount like this in the game, and the recipe is an extremely rare find associated with the Archaeology profession.
