“Turmeric is an incredibly popular herbal supplement due to the powerful properties of its active ingredient, curcumin,” says Shauna Wilkinson, lead nutritionist for the supplement brand. Dr. Vegan“Turmeric is widely recommended by health experts because it contains curcumin (a curcuminoid), a powerful active ingredient that is an antioxidant, excellent for digestion and great for joints. However, the most common misconception is that taking regular turmeric supplements is good for your joints, which is not true.
“The most important thing to look out for when buying a turmeric supplement is the curcumin content. If it doesn’t contain curcumin, it means the turmeric supplement will have little to no effect on your joints.”
What is the recommended daily intake of turmeric powder?
According to Wilkinson, “The recommended daily intake of turmeric powder depends on how it is used in the body. A good way to think about the dosage is based on the active compound, curcumin. A good starting dosage is 3mg of curcumin per kg of body weight. Most turmeric powders contain around 2% curcumin, so you should take 3,400mg of turmeric powder per day.”

“Turmeric is considered safe for most people, but taking too much can cause gastrointestinal issues, including nausea and diarrhea,” she explains.
Can you absorb enough turmeric powder from your food?
“Incorporating turmeric into your diet can be beneficial, but the curcumin content of turmeric powder varies, so it can be difficult to accurately gauge the amount of curcumin you are ingesting,” the expert reveals.
