Federal officials said Thursday they arrested a man accused of stealing more than $1.8 million in designer jewelry and other accessories from a fashionista at a Beverly Hills hotel.
According to the Justice Department, Jobson Marangoni de Castro, 37, tricked an employee at the city’s five-star Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel for a fashion event on May 10 into the city’s Brazilian capital. He has been charged with forcing him to hand over the keys to a couple’s room.
The suspect had six suitcases of glittering jewelry, including a $200,000 Flavia Vetrasso diamond necklace and an $89,400 Chopard Rule du Diamant watch, along with a $14,000 Chanel dress and other items. It is said to have been packed with the goods. According to a federal complaint.
De Castro, a Brazilian national living in Beverly Hills, then fled to Miami and allegedly tried to sell some of the stolen items to a store owner for $50,000 via Instagram, according to the lawsuit.

A suspected jewel thief was arrested Monday and charged with transporting stolen goods interstate at Los Angeles International Airport.
Prior to the jewelry robbery, De Castro allegedly took an Uber to the hotel and charged the couple’s room for a meal at the bar, federal prosecutors said.
Authorities said the man initially tried to enter the hotel room, but left and later returned after realizing one of the guests was asleep.

He was later caught on camera carrying the suitcases of unnamed victims in a hotel elevator, according to the complaint, who said the victims did not know him before.
Investigators said they tracked De Castro’s movements on the day of the theft using GPS data from his Uber ride and two suitcases containing air tags.
Other items he allegedly stole included Tumi suitcases worth $5,000. Authorities said it contained a $1,000 Rimowa carry-on bag and $285,000 worth of clothing and shoes.
He could face up to 10 years in prison.
