One of Twitter’s most popular apps achieved a major milestone on Tuesday.

While we previously reported that Bluesky has surpassed 1 million installation In July, it hasn’t actually reached the 1 million user mark yet. Wang explained the discrepancy in the response to TechCrunch on Bluesky’s new milestone means that one million people have actually been able to create an account, not just get the app.
Meta’s X/Twitter competitor, Threads, used the opposite strategy. This app saw a massive launch day spike in signups driven by Meta’s decision to cross-promote the app to existing Instagram users. With such a stressful process, it’s no wonder Threads got 30 million signups in less than 24 hours. Within five days, Threads crossed the 100 million mark.
While the Bluesky business at least appears to be thriving well among the small but enthusiastic group of early adopters, Threads may not be able to say the same for the more than a hundred million people who jumped on the new app in its early days.
The use of threads has dwindled at times, and it’s not at all clear what kind of culture — outside of company culture — the platform might cultivate. A foil to Threads in almost every way, the Bluesky subculture quickly defined itself through surreal memes, dedicated flyers, and bizarre, pervasive excitement.
