Anil Goel, chief technology officer of Byju’s, will leave the edtech giant, some of his colleagues have informed amid a broader restructuring at the Bengaluru-headquartered startup, as it looks to cut costs and consolidate many of its businesses. Jiny Thattil will replace Goel as executive artistic director, according to an internal communication.
Joel, a former Amazon executive, was one of the highest-paid technology executives in the country, according to people familiar with the matter. He and Bijou have mutually decided to part ways, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Goel’s departure comes amid a broader restructuring at Byju’s as it looks to break even next year. The startup has cut thousands of jobs in recent quarters and brought some companies together. Byju’s CFO also resigned recently.
Thatil joined Byju’s in 2020, where he led engineering at the startup before moving on to another senior role at Epic, a startup acquired by Byju’s earlier. Before joining Byju’s, Thatil worked at Amazon, InMobi and Happay.
“Thatil’s extensive experience and leadership skills make him the ideal candidate for this critical role as we continue to rebuild for greater efficiency and sustainability,” Arjun Mohan, CEO of Byju’s business in India, said in a statement following the publication of this story.
“We would also like to express our deep gratitude to Anil Goel, outgoing CTO, for his exemplary work and dedication in driving technology innovation at Byju’s.”
